Police Force, the necessity for which the Captain Supe-
rintendent of Police informs me is urgent. In this pro-
posal Major-General Gascoigne also concurs.
3.
I have consulted Sir John Carrington
who is Commandant of the Corps on the possibility of ef-
fecting some saving in the Headquarter Staff if an Adjut --
ant be appointed. He reports that there are at present
two Artillery Instructors, one at 480 per annum, xn-
other at $360, one of whom could in that event be dis-
pensed with.
4
The financial aspect is as follows.-
Proposed pay at $15 per day-$5,475; less $1,200 pay for
services of present Adjutant and $360 pay of one Artil-
lery Instructor making a difference of $3,915. But be-
sides the additional duty with Volunteers the duty of
drilling the Police Force must be taken into account,
for which special payment has to be made at present as a
temporary measure, there being no Officer of the Force
who understands the Indian Police whose drill and dis-
eipline are not in a satisfactory state.
5.
I have the honour to request your ep-
proval of these proposals.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant.
Hury Athlake
Governor, &c..
